Cin cin” is the Italian for “cheers!”
Its origin is surprisingly Chinese rather than Italian. Linguists trace it to the Chinese expression qǐng qǐng (roughly “please, please” or a polite invitation to drink). European sailors and traders encountered the phrase in Chinese ports, and it entered a form of trade language as “chin-chin.” From there it spread through Europe and eventually became the Italian “cin cin.”
